Psychological Thriller / Drama
I wrote this back in ‘93. Long story short, I spent over two years writing an action Western. And just when everyone felt the script was perfect, the director took off to do a different action Western -- in which he would be the star, not third banana. Only, the bastard took more than a little from my script, right down to characters, plot points and even lines of dialogue. If two years wasted and plagiarism aren’t a thinking man’s motive for revenge, I don’t know what is. So, I scratched his name on a bullet and I took off to Los Angeles, and --
And I calmed down. Let the next guy he rips off kill him. Still, I had more than a little rage going on, so I used it, and “Somewhere and the Night” is the result. Essentially seven days in the lives and deaths of some profoundly lost people, their intertwined stories of hopelessness and despair ultimately colliding into some extremely bleak twist endings.
In all humility, I have to say, this is a good script. Very dark, more than a little depressing, but pretty damned good. My best review came when my eleven-year-old son walked into my office in tears. He looked at me and said “You killed her” -- and he punch me right in the face and walked out. So, I followed him into the kitchen, where he sat on the floor and continued reading the script, his tears literally falling upon the pages.
Fat lip notwithstanding, it was the best review I have ever gotten.
